History Talk: Germantown Water Chestnut

Join us as we gather with Town of Germantown Historian, Tom Shannon, for an informative local history of the water chestnut infestation, previous efforts to contain it, and the relative success of the last two years, as the cutting season begins.

This event is a hybrid event and will be held both on Zoom and in-person, downstairs, in the Hover Room of the Germantown Library. Please select the RSVP option to attend via Zoom or the Ticket (free) option to attend in-person.

This event is brought to you by the Germantown Library, in partnership with the Germantown History Department, and Germantown Waterfront Advisory Committee.

About The Water Chestnuts
Germantown’s Hudson River waterfront has slowly been cut off by a massive water chestnut (trapa natans) infestation for a generation. Starting in 2023, several volunteers began attacking the infestation with an 8-feet-wide cutter mounted to an old pontoon boat. This effort has been very successful at providing summertime access to Cheviot Park, Ice House Landing, and Lower Main Street.
